Optika logoOptika was the makers of the FilePower Products: FPimage, FPmulti, FPdata, FPdocs, PowerFlow, FPdisc, FPfiler, FPtransact, among several other document imaging/management products.  In the late 90’s, Optika re-branded and re-architected its entire line of FilePower products – incorporating the next generation of Microsoft web-based technology - and called it “Optika eMedia.”  Shortly thereafter, it again re-named, re-branded and added a host of Microsoft .NET architecture changes - finally settling on “Optika Acorde” (pronounced Uh-Cor-day”).  eMedia and Acorde were the one of the industries very first Enterprise Content Management products to be completely architected upon multi-tiered (n-tiered), web based technology.  Optika customers included leading organizations such as: The Home Depot, Grainger, Clear Channel Communications, Turner Broadcasting, Focus on the Family, Southwest Airlines, Merrill Lynch, Aon Consulting, Siemens, Greenlee Textron, Warner Lambert, Simplot, Roundy’s, Food Lion, Flextronics, BMC West, The Weitz Company, Abbott Laboratories, Costco, among many others.

Optika, Inc. was purchased by Stellent, Inc. back in January 2004.  Primarily the purpose of the acquisition by Stellent was two-fold: 1) To get Stellent’s annual revenues over the $100m range so it could be recognized and moved into the upper right hand corner of Gartner’s Magic Quadrant and; 2) Fill a gaping hole in its Content Management product line strategy as Stellent did not have a fixed content product offering nor any certified ERP integration offerings to automate Accounts Payable operations.  With the Optika acquisition and two product lines (Stellent Universal Content Management (UCM) and Optika’s Imaging and Business Process Management (IBPM), Stellent could now achieve both objectives and do so much quicker than purely via organic revenue growth and internal product development efforts.

optika.comStellent, Inc. was founded in 1986 and was a publicly traded company prior to being purchased by Oracle in March of 2007.   Stellent served roughly over 1600 installations comprised of over 85,000 users throughout the world.   They provided software and solutions to manage the high–volume flow of paper and data associated with business–to–business transactions. Stellent was noted for its technology leadership and its large customer base of Fortune 1000 companies with installed applications for intranets and extranets.

Stellent was also recognized by top industry authorities for its leading-edge, proven technology in document imaging, computer report processing and workflow applications.

Stellent had been honored as one of the Top 10 Technology Impact Companies for 1997 and has been named by KM World as a 1998 "One to Watch" company.  They were also recognized as the global leader of high–performance, client/server, integrated imaging systems and development tools (due to the Optika acquisition). Stellent’s document management systems incorporated a collection of leading edge technologies, which have proven benefits and stability. Working with local business solutions partners as well as leading hardware and software providers within the imaging and workflow industry, Stellent had set the standard for providing cost–contained enterprise content management solutions.

Enough of the boring history! What’s the bottom line? Upgrades from the older generation of products exist, but the skilled and experienced talent to get you from where you are today to the newest generation of product are a rather scarce resource these days.  Most of the people from the old Optika and Stellent days have long since left the company, moved on to different organizations, exited the industry, or have retired.  Even Oracle themselves will very likely have difficulty in sourcing the skilled resources or the necessary internal software tools needed to perform upgrades, conversions, etc. from the older generation of products to the newest.   IDT is prepared and can help your organization through these seemingly difficult challenges, and do so without breaking the bank account.
